A restless flamingo finding its purpose as a dancer through the elegant and painful art of Ballet.

A Paper Sample Booklet designed for Mohawk Paper Company which tells the story of a flamingo's struggles as a dancer. The booklet contains different spreads with flaps and double gate folds, all communicating the duality of Ballet and pain the flamingo would go through in order to become a professional ballerina.

The Concept

Can flamingos dance? If so, could they overcome the hardships of Ballet and show us how they do it?

In this concept, the booklet acts as a torment book in which people will learn about Classical Ballet through a Flamingo’s perspective. Visually speaking, Ballet has been known for its perfection and grace shown through body movements and expressions. This booklet, however, takes a different visual direction that will graphically express -through the restless flamingo design spreads- the pain ballerinas experience when dancing this form of art.

The Treatment

The booklet presents a grunge-inspired aesthetic through “hand-done” textural details such as ink splotches, paint strokes, ripped paper, cut outs, foldings, metallic inks, handmade typography, bright pink and black sketched out elements, textural feathers, off register imagery, transparencies, etc. Along with the juxtaposition of black and white ballerina and fluorescent pink duotone flamingo photographs, all communicating the story of a struggling flamingo who’s learning the tough art of Classical Ballet.
